Swedish Activities (Hill walking)

Walking / Hill Walking / Trekking

The difference between summer and winter on the same hillwalk could not be more striking.

The region of Norrbotten is considered one of the last great wilderness of northern Europe. There are numerous walks within easy reach of the Högbacka house in Nystrand. Immediately behind the property is an easy and wonderful walk through the forest to the hilltops and around, the views are breathtaking. You will feel invigorated at the end of this particular walk. In the darkest days of winter where daylight hours are from around 9.00am to 2.30pm, if properly dressed and prepared walking is a great form of relaxation and exercise.

You must have the right equipment to get through the terrain.

IN WINTER

  • Thermal underclothing is essential (not cotton based but synthetic based).
  • Salopettes are recommended.
  • Gaiters are recommended.
  • A solid pair of '"worn in"' walking boots
  • A good top jacket ( Ski type ) which is a breatheable type.
  • Hat
  • Sun goggles / visor. Even with a low winter sun on the snow you need to protect from the brightness of the sun.
  • Lip balm / cream moisturizer is essential as the air is so dry and clean. You will find your skin becomes dry very quickly.
  • Take your camera you will need it.
  • Take a fully charged mobile phone and let someone know where you are going and what time you expect to return.

If you follow these guidelines walking in Swedish Lapland in winter is a joy, and remember when you return to the house at Högbacka the warmth of entering the house and the logfire in the lounge will bring a welcome smile to your face. ENJOY!!!
